French public institution under the supervision of the Ministry of Ecology, the Conservatoire du Littoral (Coastal Protection Agency) has a land policy aimed at the definitive protection of natural areas and landscapes on maritime and lake shores.
Created in 1975, it participates in the conservation of approximately 210,000 hectares spread over a network of 700 sites in Metropolitan France and overseas. Willing to consolidate its experience and strengthen the exchange of know-how and best practices, the Conservatoire du littoral develops international cooperation programs and provides institutional and technical assistance to requesting countries in the field of protection and integrated management of coastal areas.
It is thus at the origin of networks of expertise and is solicited within the framework of international programs for the protection of coastal and island natural environments.
Initiated in 2005 by the Conservatoire du Littoral, the PIM Initiative became in 2017, after a dozen years, an independent international NGO which continues its activities of promotion and assistance to the management of Mediterranean island areas.
Its objective is the preservation of these micro-areas through the implementation of concrete actions in the field, by promoting the exchange of know-how and knowledge between the protectors and specialists of the Mediterranean basin. Its approach gives priority to simple and pragmatic solutions.
Organising meetings and promoting exchanges between nature conservation stakeholders, capitalising on and disseminating knowledge and know-how are the axes structuring its action.
